Empowering Adolescent Girls, One Step at a Time

Adolescence is a critical time in a girl’s life — a phase filled with transformation, challenges, and immense potential. Yet, for millions of girls across India’s rural and semi-urban areas, this period is often marked by limited access to basic hygiene, lack of proper education on physical health, and deeply rooted social taboos, especially around menstruation.

At Aratrika Human Foundation, we believe that empowering young girls is one of the most impactful ways to shape a healthier, more equal future. Our flagship initiative, “Jago Beti” (जागो बेटी), is a focused grassroots program that aims to uplift adolescent girls aged 11 to 18 by addressing their hygiene, health, and emotional well-being.

This initiative goes beyond awareness. It is about creating lasting behavioral change, encouraging self-respect, and building a support system around young girls to help them grow with dignity and confidence.

Key Objectives of Jago Beti

Hygiene and Sanitation Education:

Many girls drop out of school or suffer in silence due to poor sanitation facilities and lack of menstrual hygiene awareness. We conduct interactive awareness sessions in schools and community spaces to educate girls on:

  • Personal hygiene routines
  • Menstrual hygiene management
  • Disposal and use of sanitary napkins
  • Preventing infections through clean practices

Access to Clean Facilities:

A large number of government and village schools either lack toilets or have unusable ones. We collaborate with local authorities, schools, and donors to ensure:

  • Safe, functioning, and clean toilets in schools
  • Running water availability in restrooms
  • Regular maintenance and gender-sensitive infrastructure

Breaking Taboos Around Menstruation:

Menstruation is still a subject of shame and secrecy in many parts of India. Through sensitization drives, group discussions, and counseling, we aim to:

  • Normalize open conversations around periods
  • Educate both girls and community members (including boys and parents)
  • Dispel myths that limit girls’ participation in school or social life

Self-Care and Clean Living:

Health starts with simple habits. We promote the importance of:

  • Daily bathing and clean clothing
  • Keeping personal spaces and bodies clean
  • Confidence in maintaining personal hygiene during puberty

Life Counseling and Wellness Activities:

Adolescents face emotional and mental challenges — from identity issues to peer pressure. Our program includes:

  • Life skills education and personality development
  • Group counseling sessions on emotional health
  • Physical activities and yoga for fitness and focus

Our Approach

“Jago Beti” is implemented through schools, local community groups, Panchayats, and health volunteers. We work with:

  • Teachers, principals, and community health workers
  • ASHA and Anganwadi workers for grassroots outreach
  • NGOs, donors, and CSR partners for scale and resources

We use visual learning tools, hygiene kits, posters, sanitary pad distribution drives, and clean toilet advocacy to make learning interactive, practical, and impactful.

The Impact We Aim For

By integrating Jago Beti into the everyday school and community environment, we aim to:

  • Improve school attendance and retention of girls
  • Reduce health issues due to poor hygiene
  • Build a generation of confident girls who know their rights, understand their bodies, and believe in their potential

Every girl deserves to grow up with dignity — and with Jago Beti, we’re turning that belief into action.
